Beauty & the Bridge Art Project
Beauty in an I-5 interchange? With the expansion of the Wilsonville Road interchange from six to eight lanes, new and improved bicycle and pedestrian access provided an opportunity for a community-wide youth art project. Cogito, as part of the BCB project team, developed and coordinated the project’s School Program resulting in over a 1,000 of Wilsonville’s elementary, middle, and high school student artists to create a unique public art within a major infrastructure construction project.
To ensure that the project reflected student voices, Cogito created a Student Art Council (SAC) early in the project. The SAC served as a liaison between the project, decision makers, community stakeholders, and the media. It represented just one layer of a remarkable process that brought together city staff, council, schools, and the community in combining long lasting public art with a major infrastructure construction project.
